What Does Blue Lagoon Do To Your Hair?

The Blue Lagoon, one of the 25 wonders of the world is a place full of gorgeous blue geothermal seawater.

While it’s high concentrations of minerals like sulfur, silica, and magnesium are amazing for your skin, they can leave your hair feeling horrible.

After spending an hour there, my hair was crunchy, insanely dry, and matted. I couldn’t even run a brush through it.

Your hair will probably return to normal in 3-5 washes, some have reported even longer! But I’ve figured out an amazing 5 step routine to get your Blue Lagoon hair feeling back to normal with just one wash.

Do You Have To Wash Your Hair Before Going In The Blue Lagoon?

You certainly don’t HAVE to wash your hair before going into the Blue Lagoon, I made the mistake of not doing it, but it will certainly help to prevent mineral build up which makes your hair really crunchy and dry.

How Do I Fix My Hair After The Blue Lagoon?

  1. Wet Your Hair Before Entering The Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon Hair Damage Prevention Step 1:

This is a really good hack anytime you’re entering a pool, to rinse your hair with water before.

Similarly, before entering the Blue Lagoon, wash it so your hair will actually absorb less of the minerals, resulting in less mineral buildup.

This is also a great tip if you have colored treated hair to do this every time before you enter a body of water!

2. Apply Conditioner Before Entering The Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon Hair Damage Prevention Step 2:

If you lather your hair in deep condition, this will help your hair absorb less of the minerals and act like a shield to protect your hair bonds before entering.

Think of it like this, when you rinse your conditioner, you always get that waxy texture? It’s the same concept, the minerals will have a harder time penetrating that waxy texture.

If you didn’t bring one, don’t worry, the Blue Lagoon provides complimentary conditioner in the shower area.

3. Clarifying Shampoo After The Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon Hair Damage Step 3:

So you didn’t do Step 1 or 2, don’t worry I didn’t either and you’ll be perfectly fine!

What you do need to do though is remember to pack a clarifying shampoo. Clarifying shampoos are deep cleansers, stronger than regular shampoos that help to eliminate grease, product residue, and impurities.

I used this clarifying shampoo from Olaplex, and it worked absolute wonders. Use this clarifying shampoo and shampoo your hair three times.

4. Get Your Best Hydrating Hair Mask

Blue Lagoon Hair Damage Step 4:

Your hair probably doesn’t feel so good at this point, after all, you did deep clean it three times. But it’s totally okay because now we’re going to add maximum hydration.

This worked WONDERS on my hair, first I used the K18 leave-in molecular repair hair mask. Afterwards, I used the Redken Bonding Liquid Hair Mask. You can use any hair masks you prefer but I found that these two worked WONDERS on my hair.

5. Blue Lagoon Hair Damage: Leave in Conditioner

Blue Lagoon Hair Damage Step 5:

After applying both masks, I decided to use a leave in conditioner to make sure I really moisturize the ends.

You can skip this step if you don’t have color-treated hair or dry hair but since I have both, I decided to take the extra step.

I used the Gisou leave in conditioner which was easy to apply and perfect since it came in a spray bottle.

I decided to leave mine on in a bun for the next 5 hours, and my hair was 100% back to normal by the next day. Here’s my before and after below!

If you do still feel the build-up in your hair, repeat the shampoo and conditioning process the next day.
