Welcome to Zhujiajiao Water Town or the Venice of Shanghai!

Located about 1.5 hours from Shanghai, this is a peaceful getaway from the bustling city with picturesque canals, a glimpse into ancient Chinese culture, a staple in Shanghai’s cultural heritage, and a place to get some amazing souvenirs and food.

One thing we noticed is that everything here is very affordable, especially compared to Shanghai, so it’s the perfect place to get lunch, stock up on souvenirs, and spend the day especially if you’re on a budget.

How To Get To Zhujiajiao From Shanghai

Zhujiajiao is located about 31 miles from Shanghai and you can take a cab, the metro, or the bus. We chose to take a taxi which was super convenient but it was difficult to call a cab back.

To secure a ride with ease, you can book this half-day private tour which includes the iconic boat ride in the watertown.

To take the metro, you can take Metro Line 17 from Central Shanghai to Zhujiajiao which takes about 60-70 minutes.

What Is Special About Zhujiajiao?

This is an incredibly special place; once you step in here, it almost feels like you’re transported into a different world. But some standouts are its historic bridges, ancient water town vibe, peaceful boat rides, and local culture.

Boat rides are a must! These gorgeous boats offer many different viewpoints of the town, and the atmosphere is peaceful and serene.

One thing you have to do here as well is rent a costume and walk around the town. It truly elevates the experience and is quite affordable: $10 for the entire day.

This was one of my favorite things we did in Shanghai, and I’ll remember it forever.

What Time To Visit Zhujiajiao Watertown?

To avoid the crowds (which can get SUPER crowded), I recommend visiting early morning at 8 AM-10 AM or late afternoon at 3 PM-5 PM. This is ideal for exploring the beautiful canals and taking gorgeous photos, and many tour groups leave in the late afternoon.

What To Do At Zhujiajiao Water Town In Shanghai

From renting an ancient costume to getting your ears cleaned, exploring the beautiful canals, and buying one-of-a-kind handmade souvenirs, there are so many things to do at Zhujiajiao Water Town.

I recommend coming here on an empty stomach so you can stack on the traditional snacks like Tanghulu (which came from China and not Korea!) or Zongzi (sticky rice dumplings)

I also picked up some rose petals here to make rose syrup at home, and I regret not grabbing more.

How Long To Spend In Zhujiajiao Water Town

You can spend all day at Zhujiajiao Water Town, especially with the commute there and back. We were exhausted after our morning trip here, so we plan to do something a bit more chilled in the evening.

What To Bring To Zhujiajiao Water Town?

If you’re going to Zhujiajiao Water Town, the #1 thing you need is comfortable footwear! One thing I wish I had known, too, is that if you decide to rent the costumes, you won’t get any shoes, so try to bring one that matches! I looked so silly running around in my high-top sneakers with such a beautiful costume.

There will be a lot of walking and shopping, so avoid heels or flats. If you’re going during the summer, bring sunscreen and a hat. Shanghai gets incredibly hot and sticky.

What I Wish I Knew Before Zhujiajiao Water Town

Explore the town and walk around a bit before renting a costume. I went with the first one and regretted it after seeing even more beautiful ones along the way.
Bring cash or set up your Alipay! There are SO many souvenirs you’ll want to buy
It’s so much more comfortable taking a car than taking the metro, especially after a long walking day.
Book your car in advance with this tour to save you the headache.

Yu Garden Shanghai: Is It Worth Going?

Despite the crowds, Yu Garden Shanghai was my favorite place in China. The architecture is incredible, show-stopping, and one of the most extraordinary things you’ll ever see.
